Yanhong (Claire) Hu, Ph.D.

Yanhong (Claire) Hu, Ph.D., is a patent attorney and partner at Element IP. She is active in patent preparation and prosecution, post-grant proceedings, and legal opinions and counseling. Her knowledge and experience in a wide variety of technical fields, combined with her legal expertise, allow her to appreciate various technologies to successfully and efficiently assist her clients.


Claire’s principal practice areas include preparation and prosecution of patent applications covering numerous diverse technologies, including polymers, metals/alloys, glass, composites, electronic and optical materials and devices, coatings, dyes, textiles, catalysts, chemical processing, and materials processing. She also exercises particular excellence in post-grant proceedings (including inter partes reviews) and providing patentability, non-infringement, invalidity, and freedom-to-operate opinions.

Claire has extensive expertise in materials science and engineering as well as a solid technical background in chemistry and physics. Her postdoctoral research at North Carolina State University focused on energetic material processing under extreme conditions. Her doctoral research at the University of Florida involved studies on thin film nucleation and formation, carbon nanomaterials, and material modification via cluster beam deposition. She also researched the synthesis of polyester polyol from vegetable oil, the production of rigid polyurethane foams from plant-oil based polyols, and the synthesis and blend modification of poly(styrene-co-methacrylic acid). Claire was an invited speaker at scientific conferences and is the lead author of a chapter of Handbook of Nanoscience, Engineering, and Technology (2nd Ed.).

Prior to joining Element IP, Claire was a Senior Associate at Oblon, McClelland, Maier & Neustadt, L.L.P.
